  • The original measuring instrument (Gunter's chain) was literally a chain consisting of 100 iron links, each 7.92 inches long.
  • The unit was once important in everyday life, being one of the fundamental units of the Imperial system in the United Kingdom and its colonies, and was used to some extent in engineering and surveying in the U.S. The use of the chain was once very common in laying out townships and mapping the U.S. along the train routes in the 19th century.
